THE ORANGE COUNTY COURTS
Orange County has a variety of courts in different parts of the city. The main courthouses are in Santa Ana.
Below is a picture of the Orange County Courthouse in 1914. It was built in 1901 and still stands at 211 West Santa Ana Boulevard in downtown Santa Ana. It is only a short walk to the present day central courthouse plaza where Orange County Superior Court for civil cases is located at 700 Civic Center Drive. 751 Santa Ana Boulevard in Santa Ana is where complex cases such as wage and hour class actions, PAGA actions for Labor Code penalties are decided. In 1882, John Irvine undertook to subdivide and sell part of his share of Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana. A 120 foot highway was built through forty acre farm lands. Irvine remained vast farming and ranch lands, too large for the Irvines to fully develop or lease at the time, while Santa Ana developed into a city.
There is also the Harbor Justice Center and Newport Justice Center. The West Justice Center located in Westminister is now also trying employment cases. OC has come a long way since its original Santa Ana courthouse!
ORANGE IS A CITY FORMED BY LAWYERS
In 1871, Andrew Glassell and Alfred Beck Chapman, members of a leading Los Angeles law firm laid out a town in the form of a square around a plaza. Orange was originally called the Richland Farm District. It was a tract of 600 acres surrounding the town. The town was advertised as beautifully watered by the flow of A.B. Chapman's Canal. The ranches ranged from a small 10 acre plot to 40 acres.
The Irvine Ranch is a fun read, and perhaps the best book on Orange County history and Irvine. Textual information in this post comes from the book.
The picture of the Orange County courthouse in 1914 is from a softback called Southern California. It was published in 1914 and is part of the Gerber California history collection.
